Why buildings leak in Tanuku

What we find on Tanuku terraces

Tanuku sits in the Godavari delta's canal and paddy belt, and the fields around it are flooded on purpose for much of the year. That keeps the water table high and the air humid, so a wall that takes on water, from the ground below or from a leaking terrace above, dries very slowly. Plaster that stays damp grows fungus and lets go of its paint, and the white salt line along the bottom of a wall is usually the ground water, not the roof.

Work buildings in Tanuku usually need

  • Rising damp treatment at the base of ground-floor walls.
  • Damp plaster stripped, dried and re-plastered before repainting.
  • Terrace waterproofing, including the joint where a newer floor meets an older slab.

Local conditions

Weather and ground in Tanuku

Tanuku has the Godavari delta's weather: hot, very humid summers and heavy rain from June to October, with cyclones off the Bay of Bengal adding intense spells in October and November. Because the air is so humid for much of the year, a wall that gets wet does not dry out on its own.

The town sits in the middle of the delta's canal and paddy belt, and the fields around it are deliberately flooded for much of the year. That keeps the water table high, so ground-floor walls and plinths deal with moisture from below as well as rain from above. Where a floor has been added on top of an older house, the joint between the old slab and the new walls is a common way in for water.

Questions

Waterproofing in Tanuku: common questions

Yes. Tanuku is on NH16 between Eluru and Rajahmundry, about two and a half hours from our base in Poranki, Vijayawada. We also cover the surrounding area, including Tadepalligudem and Bhimavaram.

Two reasons. The canals and paddy fields around the town keep the ground water high, so walls draw moisture up from below. And the delta's humid air means a wall that gets wet does not dry out on its own. Repainting does not help. The source has to be stopped and the wall allowed to dry before it is re-plastered.

The joint between the old roof slab and the new walls and slab is a weak line. Water gets in where the two meet, especially at the parapet and around pipes. That junction has to be opened, sealed and coved, and the new terrace treated as one surface.

Between January and May. The canals are lower, walls dry faster, and the coating can cure before the south-west monsoon arrives in June.

Tanuku is beyond 60 km of our base in Poranki, Vijayawada (about two and a half hours from our base), so the visit carries a charge, confirmed when you book. Visits are free within 60 km of Vijayawada. The visit includes a measured written scope, with no obligation afterwards.
