What goes wrong on schools & hospitals
Institutional buildings have long, shallow roofs, many of them added to over the years in stages that do not quite line up. The junctions between one block and the next are where they leak, along with the parapets and the roof-level tanks. What makes the work different is not the roof, though. It is what is underneath. Classrooms, wards, laboratories and record rooms cannot take dust, noise or a ceiling being chipped out during term or during visiting hours, and a damp store room full of records or medicines is a serious problem long before the plaster falls.
What you get that a householder does not need
- Work phased around terms, examinations and ward schedules.
- Noisy and dusty stages confined to agreed hours and sheeted off from occupied rooms.
- Each section closed and watertight before the next is opened.
- Junctions between blocks and roof-level tanks treated as the priority they are.
- A measured scope in a form that suits a management committee or a tender.
Working around your building
We plan around the calendar. School and college roofs are done in the holidays wherever possible; hospital blocks are phased ward by ward with the noisy preparation confined to agreed hours. Dust is sheeted off from occupied areas, and we sequence so each section is closed and watertight before the next is opened, rather than leaving a large area exposed to a sudden shower.
