Water dripping from electrical conduits and switch boards
Water coming out of a switch board is the most dangerous leak in a building and the most misunderstood one. The conduit is not the source. It is a pipe running through the slab, and once water finds a way into it anywhere along its length, it runs inside and comes out at the lowest opening — which is your switch board.

What causes it
The same wet patch can come from different places, and each one needs a different fix. This is what we look for on site.

The conduit crosses a wet slab
Pipes and junction boxes are laid on the shuttering and cast into the slab. Where the cover above them is thin, water in the slab reaches the pipe directly.

A junction box cast flush with the top
A box sitting at the terrace surface is an open mouth. Water standing on the terrace goes into it and straight into the conduit run.

A terrace or bathroom leak that found the pipe
Once water is inside the conduit it travels the length of the run. That is why the point that drips is often nowhere near the surface that leaks.

Conduits in the sunken bathroom slab
Water standing in a sunken portion is at exactly the level of the pipes crossing it, and it enters at the bends and couplers.

A conduit broken during casting
A pipe cracked at a bend by a foot or a vibrator during the pour is open from that day, and nothing on the surface will ever show it.

Step by step, in this order. Nothing is skipped to finish a day early.

Isolate the circuit first
Before anything else, the affected circuit goes off at the board. We do not open, test or work at a wet point that is still live.
- 02
Trace the run
We work out where the conduit goes and where it crosses ground that gets wet — the terrace above, a sunken slab, the outside face of a wall.
- 03
Find the entry
The surface above is flooded in sections and watched, so the entry is identified by test rather than by opening up the whole slab on a guess.
- 04
Seal the entry
The box or the conduit is opened at the top, cleaned out, packed with a plug mortar that sets against running water, and sealed over.
- 05
Treat the surface above
The terrace, sunken slab or wall that let the water in is treated as its own job, because sealing the pipe alone leaves the water looking for the next way through.
- 06
Dry, test and hand back
The point is dried out, and your electrician checks insulation before the circuit is energised again. We work to that, not around it.
