Why this is the job Tenali needs
Tenali sits low in the delta and the ground stays wet for months at a time. That produces a pattern we see constantly here and rarely in drier towns: plaster blowing off the bottom two or three feet of a wall, paint lifting in a band at roughly the same height all round the room, and a white salt bloom that comes back however many times it is wiped away. That is rising damp, ground water drawn up through the plinth and the wall, and it has nothing to do with the terrace. Owners who have had the terrace coated twice and still have a wet wall are usually looking at this.
What the work involves
The first thing we do is establish which it is, because the treatment is completely different. Damp that stops at a height, is worst after a wet spell and carries salt is coming from below. We take the affected plaster off back to sound material, treat the wall at the plinth so the path upwards is closed, and let it dry, which takes time and cannot be hurried. Only then do we re-plaster and make the surface good. Where an owner is told a coat of paint will fix it, the paint lifts again within a season, because the water is still coming.
Worth knowing before you call
- We will tell you honestly if the terrace does not need doing. Selling a terrace treatment for a rising damp problem is easy and dishonest.
- The wall has to dry before it is re-plastered, so this job has a waiting period built into it. Anyone who skips that is storing up a repeat.
